Why Go

Napahai is one of China's most important wetland bird reserves — a seasonal lake at 3,300m altitude near Shangri-La that hosts thousands of black-necked cranes, bar-headed geese, and Eurasian cranes during migration season. The sight of hundreds of threatened black-necked cranes feeding against the backdrop of snow-capped peaks is genuinely unforgettable. The landscape itself — Tibetan grassland, yak herders, and mountains — is extraordinary even without the birds.

Practical Info

Take a DiDi from Shangri-La city centre (20 min, ¥30) or rent a bicycle and cycle the 8km to the wetland edge. Best visited October–March when migratory birds are present. No formal entrance ticket but a small conservation fee may be requested at the viewpoint. Bring binoculars if possible.

For your eyes only:

Napahai (纳帕海) is well known among Shangri-La drivers. The best crane viewing spots are at the eastern lakeside.

Step-by-Step Guides

Follow these guides to navigate each part of your visit.

Visiting Napahai Bird Reserve

  1. Take a DiDi from Shangri-La city centre to Napahai wetland (20 min, ¥30)

  2. Walk along the wetland edge — the eastern and northern shores have the best crane concentrations

  3. Scan the grassland areas adjacent to the lake — black-necked cranes often feed away from the water

  4. Yak herders and their animals graze the wetland margins — the combination of wildlife and pastoral landscape is extraordinary

  5. Bring binoculars if you have them — birdwatching is significantly enhanced with optics

  6. Take a DiDi back to Shangri-La for lunch — altitude of 3,300m means physical activity tires more quickly than usual

  7. Visit the Songzanlin Monastery (松赞林寺) in the afternoon — Yunnan's largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery, 5km from Shangri-La centre

Insider Tips

  1. Visit October–March for migratory birds — in summer the lake partially dries and most birds have departed.

  2. Altitude at Napahai is 3,300m — even fit travellers feel short of breath walking. Take it slowly.

  3. Black-necked cranes are an endangered species — seeing hundreds together is a genuinely rare wildlife experience.

  4. Combine with Songzanlin Monastery (the "little Potala") in the same day for a complete Shangri-La experience.
