元阳梯田
3,000 years of Hani agricultural engineering — the most extraordinary sunrise landscape in China.
The Yuanyang rice terraces are one of China's most extraordinary man-made landscapes — over 3,000 years of Hani minority agricultural engineering carved into the mountain slopes of southern Yunnan, creating a UNESCO World Heritage Site of breathtaking scale. The terraces are most photogenic at sunrise from Duoyishu viewpoint, when morning mist fills the lower valleys and the terraces glow gold with reflected light.
Yuanyang is remote — take a bus from Kunming (5–6 hours) or fly to Mengzi then bus (3 hours). Stay overnight in Yuanyang village to be on the viewpoint before dawn. Hire a local guide or driver — the viewpoint roads are unmarked and navigation apps are unreliable. The Duoyishu viewpoint (多依树) faces east and is the best sunrise spot.

您好,我需要一位司机带我去元阳梯田的日出观景台,明天早上大约5点半出发。请问多少钱?
Hello, I need a driver to take me to the Yuanyang rice terrace sunrise viewpoint, departing around 5:30am tomorrow morning. How much does it cost?
For your eyes only:
Ask your guesthouse to arrange a driver the evening before. A driver to the Duoyishu viewpoint and back typically costs ¥80–120.
Follow these guides to navigate each part of your visit.
Arrive in Yuanyang village the day before and check into your guesthouse
Ask your guesthouse to arrange a driver for 5:30am to the Duoyishu viewpoint (东方明珠/多依树)
Wake at 5am, dress warmly — the mountain is cold before dawn
Arrive at Duoyishu viewpoint before 6am to claim a spot on the terrace
As dawn breaks, the terraces fill with reflected light — the golden hour lasts about 40 minutes
After sunrise, ask your driver to take you to the Laohuzui viewpoint for the full terrace panorama
Return to the village for a Hani minority breakfast (rice noodles and local vegetables)
Spend the afternoon exploring village paths through the lower terrace fields
Duoyishu faces east and catches the sunrise perfectly — this is the viewpoint to use, not Bada or Laohuzui (which face west).
Stay at least 2 nights — the journey to reach Yuanyang is long and a single sunrise visit barely justifies it.
A local guide or driver is essential — the viewpoint roads are not on any mapping app and are easy to miss in the dark.
Bring a tripod for the sunrise — the best shots require longer exposures in the low pre-dawn light.
