Best Time to Visit China: Month-by-Month Guide
When to go to China for the best weather, avoiding crowds, and catching festivals.

The Best Months: April–May and September–October
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are the best times to visit China. Temperatures are mild across most of the country, skies are clearer, and the extreme summer crowds have not yet arrived.
- ✓April and May: cherry blossoms in Beijing, pleasant temperatures nationwide
- ✓September and October: perfect weather, golden landscapes, fewer tourists than peak summer
- ✓Book accommodation 2–3 months ahead for Golden Week (October 1–7) or avoid it entirely
Avoid: Golden Week and Chinese New Year
China has two enormous national holidays that turn popular tourist sites into packed crowds. Chinese New Year (January/February) and Golden Week (October 1–7) see domestic tourism surge by hundreds of millions of people.
The Great Wall, West Lake, and most major attractions are virtually un-photographable during Golden Week. Hotel prices triple. Trains sell out weeks in advance. Avoid these dates if possible.
Winter Travel (November–February)
Winter in China varies enormously by region. Northern cities (Beijing, Xi'an) are cold and dry. Southern cities (Guangzhou, Guilin, Yunnan) remain mild. The advantage: far fewer tourists and lower prices.
- ✓Beijing in winter: see the Forbidden City and Great Wall without crowds
- ✓Yunnan in winter: mild temperatures, minimal rain, excellent hiking
- ✓Harbin Ice Festival (January): spectacular ice sculptures worth the cold
Summer (June–August)
Summer is hot, humid, and very crowded at tourist sites. It is also the most popular travel season for domestic tourists. Typhoon season affects coastal cities in July and August.
- ✓If you must travel in summer, book everything well in advance
- ✓Consider Yunnan or Sichuan — cooler than Beijing and Shanghai
- ✓Arrive at major attractions early morning before crowds and heat peak
Regional Weather Differences
China spans multiple climate zones. Planning based on your destination is more important than any general rule.
- ✓Beijing: hot summers, cold winters, best in spring/autumn
- ✓Shanghai: humid subtropical, best in April-May and October
- ✓Chengdu: cloudy most of the year, mild temperatures, fine year-round
- ✓Yunnan: dry season (November–April) is best for trekking
- ✓Hainan: tropical, great year-round but peak season November–March
Note: Please verify current ticket prices, reservation requirements, and operating hours before your visit, as these change regularly.
