Why Chengdu Belongs on Your China Trip
Chengdu is the capital of good living in China. Giant pandas, some of the country's best food, a thriving tea culture, and a pace of life that feels genuinely relaxed. It is also the gateway to some of China's most dramatic natural scenery.
Giant Panda Base
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is the world's best place to see giant pandas in a semi-natural setting.
- 1Book tickets in advance on the official website — tickets sell out on weekends
- 2Arrive by 8am — pandas are most active during morning feeding time
- 3The base is large — rent a golf cart or plan 3–4 hours for the full visit
- 4Red pandas are also here and far more interactive than giant pandas
- ✓Do not use flash photography near pandas — it stresses them
- ✓The panda kindergarten area has cubs and is the highlight for most visitors
Paid "panda holding" experiences have been suspended. Avoid any tour that promises this — it is no longer permitted.
Sichuan Hotpot in Chengdu
Chengdu hotpot is one of China's most memorable food experiences. The broth is loaded with Sichuan peppercorns and dried chilies — numbing and fiery simultaneously.
- 1Order a divided pot (鸳鸯锅 yuānyāng guō) — mild broth on one side, spicy on the other
- 2For mild heat, order 微辣 (wēi là)
- 3Must-order: sliced beef (肥牛), lotus root, tofu skin, oyster mushrooms
- 4Dip everything in sesame oil sauce (麻油碟)
- ✓Haidilao (海底捞) is the most foreigner-friendly chain — great service and English menus
- ✓Shu Jiuxiang on Yulin Road is authentic and popular with locals
- ✓Go at 6pm to avoid the worst queues — hotpot restaurants fill by 7pm
Best Neighborhoods and Sights
Beyond pandas, Chengdu has a rich cultural and culinary street life.
- ✓Jinli Ancient Street: tourist-friendly ancient street with snacks and crafts
- ✓Kuanzhai Alley (宽窄巷子): beautifully restored Qing-era streets with tea houses
- ✓Wenshu Monastery: active Buddhist temple, free entry, excellent vegetarian restaurant inside
- ✓Tianfu Square: Chengdu's main square, good for orientation
Day Trips from Chengdu
Chengdu is the best base for exploring Sichuan's natural and cultural treasures.
- ✓Leshan Giant Buddha (乐山大佛): 2 hours by high-speed train, 71m stone Buddha — UNESCO site
- ✓Mount Emei (峨眉山): one of China's four sacred Buddhist mountains, 2 hours from Chengdu
- ✓Jiuzhaigou National Park: 5 hours by bus, extraordinary turquoise lakes (book far in advance)

你好,我要一个鸳鸯锅。我想要微辣的。谢谢!
Hello, I would like a divided hotpot. I would like mild spice please. Thank you!
Tip: Always request the divided pot (鸳鸯锅) unless you are certain about your spice tolerance. Chengdu hotpot is significantly hotter than most Westerners expect.
Note: Please verify current ticket prices, reservation requirements, and operating hours before your visit, as these change regularly.
