Why China's High-Speed Rail is Extraordinary
China operates the world's largest high-speed rail network β over 40,000km of track connecting virtually every major city. Trains routinely travel at 300β350km/h. The BeijingβShanghai journey (1,318km) takes just 4.5 hours. It is faster, more comfortable, and more punctual than domestic flights.
- βHigh-speed trains run almost always on time β more reliable than flights
- βStations are modern, clean, and have English signage
- βFood and drinks are available on board or at station convenience stores
How to Book Tickets
Foreigners can book Chinese high-speed train tickets on Trip.com (easiest), 12306.cn (official but complex), or through a travel agent.
- 1Trip.com: search your route, select date and time, enter passport number
- 212306.cn: official site, requires registration with passport number β slower process
- 3Collect physical tickets at station kiosks using your passport
- 4Or board with ID (foreigners scan passport at ticket gates in most major stations)
- 5Book at least 2β3 days ahead for popular routes; 2 weeks ahead during holidays
- β2nd class is clean, comfortable, and excellent value
- β1st class has wider seats and more legroom β worth it for long journeys
- βBusiness class (εε‘εΊ§) has fold-flat seats and premium service
Tickets can sell out completely on popular routes during Golden Week, Chinese New Year, and major holidays. Book well in advance.
At the Train Station
Chinese train stations are enormous. Allow at least 45 minutes before your departure.
- 1Collect your printed ticket at the self-service kiosks using your passport
- 2Pass through security β bags go through X-ray, same as airports
- 3Find your waiting hall by platform number on the departure board
- 4Boarding begins about 10β15 minutes before departure
- 5Show your ticket and passport at the gate β gates close 5 minutes before departure
Train stations in China are extremely large. Arriving 30 minutes before departure is not enough β allow 45β60 minutes minimum.
On the Train
Chinese high-speed trains are clean, quiet, and comfortable.
- βSeats are numbered β find your carriage number (车ε’ε·) and seat number on your ticket
- βOverhead luggage racks accommodate standard suitcases
- βHot water boilers are available at the end of each carriage for instant noodles
- βNo need to show your ticket again after boarding β seat numbers are final
