Internet in China: What's Blocked
China's Great Firewall blocks most Western internet services. Google (Search, Maps, Gmail, YouTube), Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Twitter/X, and most Western news sites are inaccessible without a VPN.
- βWeChat is China's messaging alternative to WhatsApp β install it before your trip
- βAmap replaces Google Maps in China
- βBaidu and WeChat search replace Google Search
- βApple iCloud, iMessage, and FaceTime generally work in China without a VPN
Tourist SIM Cards
Tourist SIM cards are available at major airports. They provide data access without a Chinese ID, which regular SIM cards require.
- 1China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom all offer tourist SIMs
- 2Available at major airport arrival halls β look for telecom counters
- 3Typical plans: 5β20GB data, 7β30 days, Β₯50β150
- 4These SIMs may or may not provide access to blocked apps β ask before buying
- βAn international data plan from your home carrier is the simplest option for short trips
- βeSIM options from companies like Airalo and Nomad offer good China data rates
Setting Up a VPN
A VPN lets you access blocked sites and apps in China. It must be installed before you arrive β VPN apps cannot be downloaded inside China.
- 1Choose a VPN that works in China: ExpressVPN, Astrill, or NordVPN are commonly recommended
- 2Subscribe and install the app before your trip
- 3Test it at home to confirm it works
- 4Open the VPN as soon as you land β some work better than others at specific times
VPN reliability in China varies and can change without notice. Always have a backup plan β iMessage and Apple Maps do not require a VPN and can substitute for WhatsApp and Google Maps.
What Works Without a VPN
You can function well in China without a VPN if you use Chinese alternatives.
- βMessaging: WeChat (essential), Line (often works)
- βMaps: Amap (ι«εΎ·ε°εΎ) β better than Google Maps for China anyway
- βTranslation: Google Translate camera mode sometimes works; DeepL often works
- βEmail: Apple Mail with iCloud often works; Outlook also works
- βPayments: WeChat Pay and Alipay β these are Chinese apps and work perfectly
Hotel and Hostel Wi-Fi
Most hotels offer Wi-Fi. Quality varies significantly β international chain hotels tend to have better connections.
- βMany international hotel Wi-Fi connections include access to some blocked sites
- βDownload content (maps, entertainment, offline guides) before leaving your hotel
- βStarbucks and international coffee chains usually have reliable Wi-Fi
Note: VPN availability and internet access in China can change without notice. Always verify the current situation before your trip.
