长江索道
A retro aerial gondola crossing the Yangtze — genuine public transport with extraordinary views.
The Yangtze River Cableway is one of Chongqing's most unique experiences — a retro gondola system originally built as public transport that now carries a mix of commuters and wide-eyed tourists across the Yangtze River, passing apartment blocks at eye level. The crossing takes about 5 minutes and provides an extraordinary elevated view of Chongqing's vertical cityscape and the Yangtze below.
Take Metro Line 6 to Linjiangmen station and walk 10 minutes east to the north cableway station (Xinhua Road). Buy a ticket at the station for a few yuan. The cable car crosses to the south bank (Nanbin Road) and back. Runs throughout the day with short waits. Return ticket available.

Buy a return ticket (¥18) at the station ticket window
Queue for the gondola — waits are usually under 10 minutes outside rush hours
Board the gondola and find a window position for views of the river below
As you cross, look at Chongqing's hillside buildings at eye level — an extraordinary vertical cityscape
Disembark on the south bank (Nanbin Road) and explore the riverside walkway or return immediately
On the return crossing, look back north at the Yuzhong Peninsula for the classic Chongqing view
This is real public transport used by Chongqing commuters daily — be respectful and let locals board efficiently.
Evening crossings are most dramatic — the city lights up and the Yangtze reflects neon in the dark water.
The gondola holds about 40 people — if it feels full during off-peak hours, wait for the next one for more comfortable viewing.
Combine with the Liziba monorail through the building (Metro Line 2) for a full day of Chongqing's engineering marvels.
