Why Go

M50 is Shanghai's most important contemporary art destination — over 100 galleries and artist studios occupy a remarkable industrial complex of brick warehouses dating to the 1930s along Suzhou Creek. Entry to the complex is free and galleries are almost all walk-in. A morning here gives a comprehensive view of what is happening in Chinese and international contemporary art.

Practical Info

Take Metro Line 13 to Jiangning Road station and walk 10 minutes north along Moganshan Road. Or take a DiDi directly. The complex is open daily but galleries may be closed Monday. The Suzhou Creek riverside gives excellent views of the industrial architecture.

Opening Hours

Complex: 9:00am – 6:00pm. Individual galleries may vary.

Entry Fee

Free (individual gallery exhibitions may charge ¥20–50)

Step-by-Step Guides

Follow these guides to navigate each part of your visit.

Exploring M50 Art District

  1. Take Metro Line 13 to Jiangning Road station, walk 10 minutes north along Moganshan Road

  2. Enter the complex from the Moganshan Road gate — the brick warehouses are immediately apparent

  3. Pick up a free gallery map at the entrance information board

  4. Wander freely — most galleries have open doors and welcome browsers

  5. Look for staircase signs to upper-floor studios — some of the best work is hidden on level 2

  6. ShanghART Gallery (building 16) and Leo Gallery are consistently the highest-quality spaces

  7. Walk along the Suzhou Creek behind the complex for architectural photos

Insider Tips

  1. Entry to the complex and almost all galleries is free — this is one of Shanghai's best free cultural experiences.

  2. Come on a Tuesday–Sunday morning — weekday visits are quieter and gallery staff have more time to talk.

  3. The exterior walls of the warehouses are covered in commissioned street art — worth photographing.

  4. The café inside the complex (near building 7) is excellent for a break between galleries.
